I got Hole's first single and hated it. I found Pretty On The Inside to be just ok, a bit too noisy and dissonant.
But Live Through This not only sounded better, the songs offered a more sophisticated take on feminist punk rock.
This article does a good job of explaining what was so cool about this album from a socio-political point of view.

I post about it every so often, but I again wish to take a moment to mention how much I love my breakfast sandwich making toaster.
Some water in the tray on the right
Pop in bread, and egg and whatever topping I want heated and turn it on and go about getting ready and in a few minutes…hot breakfast sandwich waiting to be assembled!
You can see how much it’s been used since you can no longer read the brand lettering. 😂

Picture of a black plastic and stainless steel breakfast making toaster with two slice opening and a compartment on the right that is clouded with condensation as it steams an egg and a couple links of sausage.

I love that my wife is so generous with material possessions. I never had any problem at all with her lending or even giving our stuff to people in need.
Except for the time when she gave an old digital camera to a budding migrant photographer without checking what was in the data card.
Because what was there was a picture of myself kneeling in front of Sir Terry Pratchett, when he was in Milan for a book signing a long time ago.
I still love her, but it's harder.

Memory, nostalgia, personal
Today I've reached the part of Szczecin that I haven't visited for 15 years or so. I have to say: memory is interesting.
I only had minimal recollections before, some place names I've visited, some associations, maybe a few rough visual memories. Looking at the map helped uncover a bit more but not much.
Today, walking (unknowingly following a similar route), memories returned in bulk. "I've been here before", "I totally forgot about these plane trees", "I remember this fence", "we sat somewhere over there". Even some images returned.
I was hit by nostalgia too. After all, all that was important to me. I was in love, and for the first time in my life everything was going just right. These were the good memories.
So what's the issue? Perhaps it is that it's easier to cherish good memories when the present is good as well, or at least you're convinced that it's going to go in the right direction. Perhaps you need precisely that to avoid perceiving these memories as the good old days that are never coming back.
Or perhaps it's an autism spectrum thing. Perhaps these memories will always represent attachment to a person that's no longer a part of my life. Dreams that didn't come true. Good times that has passed, and that I didn't cherish as much as I wish I would. Memories made together that remain important to me, but not to anyone else. And these memories that I've lost, though they remain present at the edge of conscience, reminding of their existence, but ever unreachable.

Then go and waste time on Mastodon for half an hour (protip: you could do something useful with your life in this period of time, but honestly why would you!).

dinner at ristorante il corsaro where we had a fabulous meal in ‘22
they serve fish here
we had mixed grill and lemon sole
our waiter—our really really old, extremely old waiter—says things like i love you, baby and mamma mia

primi piatti was shrimp with small prawns that were not shelled, i.e. inedible i mean fuck that, but delicious
insalata mista and mixed grilled fish, which comprised squid, prawns, and red snapper. prawns remained a problem and squid was … squid but the red snapper was great.
lemon sole was perfetto
18€ local white wine “palatius” was delicioso!

Incel CS lecturer at Waterloo
$2.4.1 DIFFICULTIES OF HUNTING AT WORK"
I don't know what to say
"In academia, dating and romantic/sexual relationship between professors and students is controversial"
Yes. Yes it is.
"There is clearly a world-wide bias in judgmental decisions for accusing males, compared to females, in harassments. It may be because males usually ask out and show interest in females and females may take it as an offense."
Okay so has anyone explained to you the concept of power dynamics and unethical abuse of authority roles?
"A funny thing is that once, in a seminar for teaching assistants in the University of Waterloo, they told us that teaching
assistants should not date students. I asked about the case of John Nash. The professor answered me that they married
after the student graduated (which I think is not true). Then, I answered even if that is true, did they suddenly get
married without any dating? Of course, they dated before that, while she was a student! I think they themselves know
that this rule is nonfunctional because if the professor/instructor and the student are both single, they may like each
other or fall in love as they interact frequently in the school. This rule was even criticised in the American comedy show "Friends" (season 6, episode 18)."
Ok, there's a lot to unpack here, but the main bit is this: Do you understand that the sitcom "Friends" is not a good source for understanding ethics?

It's not that I think Tiktok is an angel or I love the CCP, –I think the data collection done by Tiktok and all other apps/sites should be banned. It's sus to go after one app unless it's doing something Meta wouldn't do.

My brain when I'm out of town: bro, I would love to write that blog post right now, I can literally recite each and every sentence of it.
My brain when I'm back home, in front of the computer: *Windows XP shutdown sound*

By the way, do you have a personal website and does it have a home page? (I’m pretty sure it does… 😁)
I would love to know: what’s on your “home” and why?
Feel free to share a link, of course. 🤗 As always, I’m also asking on behalf of my #OwnYourWeb newsletter subscribers.

Honestly, I love reading Stephen Jay Gould's essays on #evolution, #biology and other topics. Some of them are almost 50 years old, many of them are outdated (sometimes corrected by later essays), many of them state things that are obvious to people living today.
Nevertheless, they're not only written in great style, but reading them is like witnessing history in the making. It's not like dry facts you learn a school, or historical accounts made by people with future perspective (though Gould often did such accounts as well, and tried to put ideas in context of their era) — it's about witnessing them as exciting new ideas.
The first collection is #book

And....almost an hour later and I'm still awake.🤦‍♂️
Gotta love insomnia.
On another note, I do LOVE when someone attempts to explain something I am quite knowledgeable about...🤣
Some dude just tried explaining how BridgyFed works to me on BlueSky after I called him out telling folks to use it wrongly.🤦‍♂️
I did kinda "leak" the info ya know, I know how it works.🤣🤣🤣

I'm particularly interested in trying to understand whether it's just a case of "any interaction/bridge is bad" or if there are certain aspects of bridging that are considered more/less harmful/problematic.
I'd also love to understand why Bluesky is materially different from interconnectivity between Fedi software (Lemmy, PeerTube, Masto, etc.) or even between Mastodon servers. There's a definite argument around surveillance capitalism, but beyond that (or is that reason enough?)?

Content warning: Tesla

Tesla has done something truly unique with the cybertruck.
Been doing a lot of car shopping lately. Most of the time I see a picture of a car & don’t love it, looks weirdly disproportionate, but then I see it in person & it looks much better. Cars are generally designed to be seen in person, in 3D, with human focal length and ocular distance.
Cybertruck: As hideous as it looks in pictures, it actually looks 10x worse irl. Like someone made a replica for their kid out of f…
